During this 90 minute workshop you will learn the mindful and relaxing craft punch needle to make your own mini hoop gift topper using 100% British Wool.

Rachel will teach you the technique and provide you with her knowledge on this traditional craft.

Rachel Lawson

The Modern Crafter is co-run by sisters, Rachel and Siobhan who hand design and make by hand, punch needle and embroidery kits with a focus on using sustainable materials. Siobhan is the designer for the brand who studied Fashion & Textiles at Heriot Watt in Galashiels. The duo is also author of Punch Needle, 15 Contemporary Projects and has been featured in various Craft magazines.

ENGLISH PAPER PIECING with Susan Finlay, Sew Confident – Friday 12.15pm

90-minute workshop – cost £25.00

English Paper Piecing is a method of patchwork where fabric is wrapped around shapes made of thin paper or cardboard. Once the shapes are covered in fabric you will then hand stitch them together to form a design.

SewConfident quilting tutor Susan will take you through the whole process and share all her hints and tips for to produce a beautiful design that can be used as part of a quilt or as a decoration on another me made item.  This is a lovely, mindful project that you don’t need any prior sewing experience to be able to participate in.

Susan Finlay

Susan Finlay, Sew Confident Susan has been sewing for as long as she can remember, having been taught as a child to sew and knit by her Mum and Gran. For the last 12 years Susan has enjoyed patchwork and quilting and for the last 10 running a business making memory quilts and memory animals. When not sewing for her business Susan enjoys English Paper Piecing as it is such a relaxing craft to do, as it’s all hand stitched it makes it fairly portable and so easy to carry about

Louise Armitage, aka ‘Gini’

Gini has been teaching and keeping the 400-year old traditional craft of Dorset Buttons alive for 33 years.

Originally taught by an old lady from Dorset, who’s family skill had been passed down through generations, and now had no one left to pass it on to. Gini made her a promise that she would teach other people and continue to pass on the skills. Gini has kept this promise and taught individuals and workshops all over the UK and around the world.

Bringing the skill up to date with modern ideas and techniques she won Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas with her unique designs in 2020.

NEEDLE FELTED LARGE YULE TOMTE with Steffi Stern, The Makerss – Saturday 13.15pm

Learn how to needle felt this large Yule Tomte with his soft white beard, long pointy hat and striped arms with mittens using just natural and fast felting wool and felting needles.

Steffi Stern, will teach you techniques and tricks on how to make basic shapes and join them together and add shapes to the surface. Steffi’s style is supportive, encouraging and fun filled.

Take your bearded Tomte home together with any left over wool, The Makerss Eco Wool Felting Mat, felting needles and full colour step-by-step instructions.

A complete boxed needle felting kit is included in this workshop.

The finished size is about 25cm tall.

Steffi Stern

German born Steffi Stern is a craft enthusiast and has been crafting for as long as she can remember. In 2010 Steffi turned her passion into her profession when she opened her first craft shop in Gloucestershire.

Fast forward to today and she now runs the successful craft business The Makerss. She has written four books on needle felting and doll making. Steffi loves combining her business experience with her passion of crafting and helping others to realise their creativity. Steffi’s teaching style is supportive, encouraging and fun filled.

VASE OF FLOWERS with Helen McKenna – Sunday 14.15pm

90-minute workshop – cost £25.00

Take time out in this relaxing workshop, where you will be taught some basic embroidery stitches that will help you create a lovely ‘Vase of Flowers’ picture, that you could frame or mount in a card to give as a gift.

The flowers are formed from a mix of hand made fabrics and dyed wool. Embroidery stitches covered include: backstitch, running stitch, French knots, cross and satin stitches. There will be a choice of threads and backing fabrics available.

Finished picture size approximately 10.5cm square.

This workshop is suitable for adults over the age of 16: some stitching experience is required, but tuition for embroidery techniques will be given in the class.

Helen McKenna

Helen originally learned to sew as a child making clothes for her dolls. As a teenager she would rush to buy fabric after school to make something for a Saturday night out. A City and Guilds in Fashion followed and then one in Creative Embroidery too.

As part of a stitching group Helen’s work was exhibited locally and further afield. Then a chance conversation whilst visiting a textile show, led to Helen attaining BA Hons first class in Contemporary Applied Art in 2007. In that same year Helen became a finalist in the Hand and Lock embroidery competition.

Although no longer part of the stitching group, Helen continues to find inspiration through workshops, exhibitions and visiting galleries. She has been involved with demonstrating and teaching at ICHF Events for 15 years and is looking forward to the Glasgow shows.

STITCHED CONCERTINA BOOK with Helen McKenna – Thursday 14.15pm

Take time out in this lovely slow stitching workshop and create a beautiful heirloom fabric book.

During this workshop Helen will lead you through the process of creating a vintage fabric concertina book using a pre-cut and painted backing fabric. A variety of fabrics, threads and buttons are provided in your kit, but Helen will also have plenty of extra ‘bits’ to choose from.

Helen loves making stitched books and says, “This little book is a lovely way to keep precious little treasures safe. Please bring along any small items that you would like to include in your book.”

SPARKLING PEARLS with Mairi Carlton, Beadworkers Guild – Sunday 13.00pm

60-minute workshop – cost £18.00

During this workshop you will make three pearl and crystal beaded beads, embellished with crystal rose montees for that extra sparkle. 

You will have the choice of adding them to a chain for a fabulous sparkling necklace with matching earrings to add some bling to your outfits for those festive occasions. 

Alternatively, you can use the beads to make a stunning festive tree decoration. Either option would be perfect for a gift or just as a treat for yourself.

Mairi Carlton

Originally a self-taught beader, Mairi has been creating and teaching her own designs for over 20 years. Mairi organises a large beading group in Glasgow called ‘Beadwildered’, teaching locally on a regular basis and delivers workshops online and nationally for several organisations. Mairi is currently the Chair of the Trustees for the Beadworkers Guild.
