Join Claire in this fun workshop to create a beautiful raffia mirror accessory for your home.
During this class you will be using natural Madagascan Grade 1 raffia to craft your natural decorated mirror frame.
All the materials will be supplied on the day including the frame, raffia, mirror and some pieces of coloured raffia as well as fabric strips if you would like to ‘bling’ your mirror decoration a little too.
No prior raffia craft experience is necessary, complete beginners are welcome.

 

Under Claire expert guidance, you will:

 

● Learn how raffia is a beautiful sustainable material for crafting
● How it can be dyed and its flexibility
● How to sort good from not-so-good raffia
● How to plait the raffia (incorporating some coloured pieces or material strips if you wish)
● How to successfully trim your plait
● Learn how to sew raffia using raffia onto the frame
● Finish off the project by making a neat circular shape
● Learn how to attach mirror plates securely to the back, ensuring that the mirror will hang safely at home
Finally, discover how the skills gained in this workshop can also be used to make other beautiful raffia items – a hat, maybe a clutch or even a larger bag? There are many stunning options…

Advisory Note:
This workshop is suitable for anyone aged 14 to 102 and this includes complete beginners for raffia craft. It involves the basic skills of plaiting, trimming and sewing.

About The Tutor

Claire has been working with raffia since the early 90s when she learnt the skills from a visiting Australian. Claire has worked with raffia over the years since, and this includes writing a book – Raffia, The Crowood Press. Claire now focuses on developing new products as well as attending events and running workshops through her business ‘all things raffia’. She has recently created several digital courses and patterns and improved her kits. She works to make any raffia workshop fun, inclusive and loves to see her students having fun and creating great raffia makes.
